Special Report California and Technology are currently in a downturn but is not apparent from the performance of the NASDAQ. On its own, the job losses in the Tech sector are not significant enough to precipitate a US recession. However, when coupled with direct and indirect spill-over effects into other service sectors, the impact on consumption could trigger a recession. In North America, we are overweight Venture Capital and Private Credit, becoming more optimistic on CRE, and underweight Private Equity.
Special Report Investors often misjudge Global Macro managers. We outline key manager evaluation criteria and highlight the power of combining Macro Hedge Funds and Private Equity. Even for those who are not Macro Traders nor invest in Hedge Funds, this report may change the way you assess potential employees, partners, and even yourself—the most critical elements of any investment strategy.
We are positive Private Credit but currently underweight Public BDCs. Today’s market pricing and sentiment in BDCs are excessively optimistic. Long-term investors should await a better entry point. Traders may find an attractive short. This report also peels back the Public BDC onion and presents over/underweights across individual BDCs via our filtering methodology. Also included at the end of this report is an updated presentation titled 'Private Credit: Drivers Of The Boom And Understanding Risks On The Horizon,' recently presented at GII’s Private Credit Roundtable in Australia. It features updated charts and additional analysis.
We go overweight Late-Stage Venture Capital and APAC Private Equity but remain underweight North America Buyouts. We maintain our neutral outlook towards Hedge Funds and are positive on Long-Short Equity, Event Driven, and CRO strategies. We are cooling towards Direct Lending strategies as competition and relative opportunities increase. CRE’s downturn continues to unfold; we are starting to be buyers.
Valuation metrics in Private Equity and Venture Capital vary widely by source, stage, location, and other factors. They are prone to imprecision, which is why investors should monitor a diverse set. This report offers a series of charts comparing valuation ratios. Focusing solely on valuations reveals that North America Middle Market Buyouts appear less attractive and geographical selection will be more important going forward.
AI is not the Early-Stage bet investors should be making. It is obvious and highly competitive. Venture Capital is not about direct competition but about pioneering new directions. While everyone is distracted with AI, investors should look to Aerospace & Space Technology. Strategic buyers will provide exit opportunities.
Special Report Multifamily Real Estate is poised for a downturn, which will have ripple effects on the global economy. Present market fundamentals fail to compensate for the risks. Investors should seek opportunities in Fixed Income and Credit markets, while avoiding equity investments in Multifamily.
We are upgrading Europe Private Equity, predominantly driven by Buyouts, from underweight to neutral. Our outlook towards Global Buyouts is improving, with Europe benefiting from enhanced credit availability and an earlier recession. Non-domestic investors may also be advantaged by an appreciation in the EUR and GBP over the next market cycle.
Special Report The next dollar into Private Equity carries more time and opportunity cost risk. We do not see a high risk of permanent capital loss for the next vintages; existing vintages we do. While our primary focus revolves around the next dollar, it is valuable to comprehend the risks associated with current investments made through yesterday's allocations. In this report we delve into risks pertaining to dollars invested in the past and those earmarked for the future, with a special emphasis on Buyouts.
The wall of maturities for Office and Multifamily Real Estate is upon us. The impact of rising interest rates is also being felt by Private Equity and Venture Capital. The difficulties faced by smaller US banks is providing further tailwinds to Direct Lenders. Hedge Funds will benefit from a more volatile backdrop over the next 1-2 years. Now is the time to resize Crisis Risk Offset portfolios.
