Special Report In this *Special Report*, we analyze the dollar’s reserve status within the context of geopolitical crosscurrents. In our view, there is more than meets the eye when betting on the end of the dollar’s reserve status.
Special Report The conventional economic thinking about the likely impact of AI is misguided because it extrapolates linearly from what AI can do today to what it can do tomorrow. Just as the investment community and the broader public were blindsided by the exponential rise in Covid cases during the early days of the pandemic, they will be blindsided by how quickly AI transforms society and the economy.
If the recession begins this year, it is unlikely to be mild, because inflation will not have fallen by enough to allow the Fed to cut rates aggressively. In contrast, if the recession starts in 2024 or later, when inflation is likely to be much lower, the Fed will be able to cushion the blow. Our base case remains a 2024 recession but the risks around that view have increased in light of recent banking stresses.
Special Report An important annual event is when long-time client Mr. X visits BCA strategists at the end of each year to talk about the economic and financial outlook and a write-up of the discussion is published as our Annual Outlook report. Recently, BCA’s former Chief Economist Martin Barnes had the pleasure of a chance encounter with Mr. X at an airport lounge, and this report is an edited transcript of their conversation.

A benign disinflation is probable during the remainder of 2023. Unfortunately, just when most people become convinced that a recession has been avoided, a recession will begin.
Special Report In this Special Report, BCA Strategist Ritika Mankar highlights that Japanese savers own foreign assets to the tune of a staggering $6.5 trillion today. As implausible as it may seem today, the rate cycle in Japan will turn later this decade. Once it does, Japanese savers will sell down their global assets – a dynamic that is likely to kick up a storm.
In this Strategy Outlook, we present the major investment themes and views we see playing out for the rest of 2023 and beyond.
It is too early to know whether the drop in bond yields will offset the drag on growth from tighter lending standards. But if it does, the net effect on equity valuations could be positive. This is enough to justify a modest tactical overweight to equities, with the proviso that investors should look to reduce equity exposure later this year in advance of a mild recession in 2024.
The turmoil in US regional banks will weigh on economic growth. Arguably, it would be better for the broader stock market if growth slowed because banks became more conservative in their lending than if it slowed because the Fed had to raise rates to over 6%. In both cases, economic growth would decelerate but at least in the former scenario, the discount rate applied to earnings would not be as high.
